Professor Megan Davis attends 12th Session of the UNPFII
Prof Davis is currently participating in the 12th Session of the Permanent Forum at UN Headquarters, New York. This year's theme is "Review Year".
The UNPFII was estabished in 2000 in response to concerns raised by Indigenous peoples regarding the appropriateness of the previous structures within the UN for addressing Indigenous issues. The limited representation of Indigenous people within the UN at the time was also of concern.
As an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council, the UNPFII is responsible for:
- provide expert advice and recommendations on indigenous issues to the Council, as well as to programmes, funds and agencies of the United Nations, through the Council
- raise awareness and promote the integration and coordination of activities related to indigenous issues within the UN system
- prepare and disseminate information on indigenous issues (UNPFII, 2013)
